History

The Association was created in Paris in 1878 by la SOCIÉTÉ DES GENS DE LETTRES with Victor Hugo as honorary chairman. The ALAI's main objective was the creation of an international agreement aimed at protecting literary and artistic copyright.

Eight years later, on September 9th, 1886, the very famous Berne Convention was created.

Then, the ALAI took part in all the talks surrounding the revision proceedings for the Convention: Paris (1887), Berlin (1908), Rome (1928), Brussels (1948), Stockholm (1967) and Paris (1971).

Furthermore, since its creation, the Association formed privileged relationships with international authorities and took part in several major events that dealt with the issue of copyright.
